Summer is a great time to enjoy various outdoor activities. Unfortunately, the hot summer temperatures and increased sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin. UV-B rays impact the surface layers of your skin creating issues such as sunburn, pigmentation changes, premature aging, and skin cancer. UV-A rays and excessive heat exposure can penetrate the deepest layers of your skin and damage your collagen and elastin, causing skin wrinkling and sagging. Here are a few suggestions to keep your skin safe throughout these hot summer months:
1) First and foremost, avoid the sun whenever possible, especially between the hours of 10am to 3pm. Stay in the shade and wear protective clothing such as light long sleeve shirts, sunglasses and hats. Tanning during the summer is tempting, but remind yourself of the long term damage you are causing your skin.
If you like the look of summer kissed sun, there are sunless body tanners available to give you a summer glow without harming your skin. bareMinerals (available in store only) has a great self-tanner called Faux Tan Body. Faux Tan Body is easy to apply, results are natural and long lasting, and the color is buildable If you desire a deeper tan.
Bronzers are also a great way to get that sun kissed look without exposing your skin to the sun’s damaging rays. Becca’s Shadow & Light Bronze/Contour Perfector or Shimmering Skin Perfector in Topaz are great additions to any summer makeup bag.
2) If there is no avoiding it and you plan on spending time in the direct sunlight, take some precautions to protect yourself. If you do any exfoliation, make sure to stay out of the sun for at least 72 hours. Exfoliation processes can remove your protective barrier function which increases your susceptibility to sun damage.
When out in the sun, make sure you are protecting your skin with a broad spectrum SPF. Eminence Organic Skin Care has many products designed to protect your skin. Two ultra-light daily moisturizers are the Red Currant Protective Moisturizer SPF 30 which offers a Youth Shield Antioxidant Complex to protect against signs of aging and the Persimmon and Cantaloupe Day Cream SPF 32 which improves skins appearance by helping firm and lift. For dryer skin, use the Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32 which has shea butter for increased moisture. For all over body coverage, we recommend the Tropical Vanilla Body Sunscreen SPF 32. Don’t forget to protect your lips! Both Eminence’s Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm and GloMinerals’ Cherry and Mint Balm are moisturizing, offer SPF 15, and are a treat for the lips.
3) Heat from the sun will open your pores, so if applying makeup throughout the summer, you may notice an increase in break outs. Make sure you are wearing non-comedogenic makeup to reduce and/or avoid skin blemishes. When it comes to non-comedogenic makeup, mineral based makeup is the way to go. GloMinerals liquid and powder foundations are mineral based, offer medium to full coverage depending on the formulation, and come in a wide variety of shades. bareMinerals (available in store only) liquid (bareSkin and Complexion Rescue) and powder (ORIGINAL and MATTE) foundations also help to protect your skin by providing a range of SPF from 15 to 30. Eminence Sun Defense Minerals SPF 30 offers light coverage, is water resistant, hypoallergenic, and loaded with vitamins A, C, and E. The travel friendly applicator also makes it easy to throw it in your bag and head to the beach!
4) Last but not least, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water! Dehydration effects your skin by making it dry, flaky, and tight. The dryer your skin is, the more prone you are to wrinkling. Additionally, drinking water benefits your complexion and helps flush toxins that damage your skin.
Summer weather is meant to be enjoyed, so enjoy! Just be safe and make sure to protect yourself from long term impacts on your skin.
